The Bible and Science and Health are the pastor of the Christian Science Church.
In our church services and meetings lay members of our congregation are elected to read aloud from the pastor. The sermon they read on Sundays is a Bible Lesson, a compilation of texts from the Bible and Science and Health on a particular topic that Christian Scientists around the world study throughout the week preceding the Sunday service.
The Bible: Foundational to Christian Science
The Bible is at the heart of Christian Science, central to its study and practice, and its system of healing. Through her earnest Bible study, Mary Baker Eddy discovered the healing power of God and the spiritual laws of health and healing that undergirded Christ Jesus' teachings and works. In her seminal work Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures she writes, “The Bible has been my only authority,” and “my only textbook,” and “contains the recipe for all healing,” and describes it as “the chart of life” (Science and Health, pp. 126, 110, 406, 24).
The Bible and Science and Health are the textbooks for self-instruction in Christian Science, they are central to Sunday School, and a weekly Bible Lesson which is available for individual study. This same weekly Bible Lesson is the Sunday sermon that is read in Christian Science church services throughout the world. Christian Science Bible Lesson
Christian Scientists regularly study Bible Lessons outlined in the Christian Science Quarterly which consist of correlated passages from the Bible and Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures.
Every day Christian Scientists apply what they learn from their study in healing disease, injury, and all kinds of other problems, plus praying for the world. At the end of the week the Bible Lesson is used as the sermon in Sunday Church Services. There is a new Bible Lesson each week.
